Academics:
We strive for our students to reach their full academic potential. This is achieved first by addressing each child’s behavioral issues. Since our teaching staff has been trained in ABA, this is achieved quickly and allows us to start focusing on each child’s academic program as soon as possible. We use their individual learning style to plan with parents and to implement an individualized academic program.
We use a variety of approaches and curriculums, such as Handwriting Without Tears, Explode the Code Phonics Series, Everyday Math, Shoebox Tasks and Touch Math. Our teaching and therapy staff work together to integrate skills across all disciplines.
Independent Living Skills:
An important facet of our program is for the student to learn to be as independent as possible in regards to daily living skills. Once a particular life skills theme is chosen (i.e. home), the student’s academic and functional goals are focused around it. These skills are often taught in a more natural setting to allow the child to transfer what they learn here at the Academy to their home environment.
Our Methods:
Our general philosophy is Applied Behavior Analysis. We require our instructors to have a bachelor’s degree and to be certified in behavior analysis. Some of the techniques we currently use are direct instruction, precision teaching, discrete trial training, task analysis, verbal behavior, structured work sessions, naturalistic approach and small group instruction. Our methods constantly evolve because we are receptive to new teaching approaches and frequently attend workshops and seminars to stay current.
